The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is responsible for designing and coordinating a wide array
of services for California residents with developmental disabilities. These services are provided through a
statewide system of 21 locally-based regional centers. Regional centers are nonprofit private corporations
that have offices throughout California to provide a local resource to help find and access the many services
including transportation available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

The term developmental disability refers to a severe and chronic disability that is attributable to a mental or
physical impairment that begins before individual reaches adulthood. These disabilities include mental
retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, and disabling conditions closely related to mental retardation
or requiring similar treatment.

Transportation services are provided so persons with a developmental disability may participate in
programs and/or other activities identified in the IPP, (Individual Program Plan.) A variety of sources may
be used to provide transportation including: public transit and other providers; specialized transportation
companies; day programs and/or residential vendors; and family members, friends, and others.
Transportation services may include help in boarding and exiting a vehicle as well as assistance and
monitoring while being transported.
